Have a look into the Basics of a Lanyard

When there is a convention, social gathering, graduation ceremony, and corporate events and so on, you can see the organizers or the volunteers wearing an identification badge around their neck that dangles from a strap. Apart from this, trainers, coach and many wear whistles around their neck using this strap. This strap is actually called a lanyard. This strap is used in different sectors widely especially by business, schools and hospitals.

What are the various uses of lanyards?

Apart from being used in different organizations and at various conventions, events and reunions, it is used as a promotional tool. In order to use this as an advertising medium, customized logo or name must be printed on the strap. These straps come in different colors and types with different attachments at the bottom to hold an identity badge, keys and whistle.

How are the lanyards made?

Nylon, polyester, cord and cotton twills are used to manufacture lanyards. Whereas the least expensive lanyard is concerned, the cord type can be the best choice. However, if you want to have anything printed on the cord strap, you cannot do this because of its flat surface. Some lanyards have a small bulb that contains a retractable reel to use with keys or an identification badge. Some of them may have breakaway attachments so that if the strap gets entangled, the hardware will come off easily before it pulls on the neck.

Cotton, polyester and nylon are used to make the strap-type lanyards. These lanyards are good for printing company name or logo, team name or product name.

When it comes to lanyard printing, basically four different printing methods are used. These are hot stamping, silk screen printing and heat transfer and sewn-in.

Whereas heat transfer and sewn-in are concerned, they are known as different names. Some refer heat transfer as dye sublimation and sewn-in as embroidered, jacquard and woven.
How are the lanyards printed?

Hot stamp:

If you want to have lanyards in the hot stamping printing process, first you need to offer an artwork. According to that artwork, a metal plate is designed. The metal plate is heated and a color film is put into this. Once the color gets hot, it is placed over the lanyard. Pressure is applied onto the metal plate which heats the color film and transfer the color and design onto the lanyard. This printing process uses only one color and it is known to be the least expensive option. This is suitable for many purposes like reunions, trade shows, identification badges and so on.

Silk screen printing:

For higher quality and more durable results, silk screen printing offers the best option. When a customer offers an artwork, a fine mesh screen is made. The screen is placed atop the material and the ink is applied onto the screen. A sponge pushes the color through the screen to create a design underneath the fabric. In the silk screen printing process, heat is applied to dry the ink to get a high-resolution effect.

Heat transfer:

Heat transfer or dye sublimation is considered a superior printing technology that can produce multicolored and highly elaborated designs. When a customer chooses an artwork, this artwork is transferred to a fine paper. This fine material uses heat dye sublimation ink colors. This fine paper is put on the lanyard and heat and pressure are applied onto it. This allows the image to be embossed into the material. The best part about this printing process is that the design remains intact even if the pressure is applied. Simultaneously, the image on the lanyard is less susceptible to fading and abrasion.

Sewn-In or embroidered is a permanent process of printing like other three printing processes. Any message or text is sewn or embroidered on the fabric of the lanyard. In this printing method, the reverse image appears on the underside of the lanyard fabric. Therefore, message can be seen from both sides.

If you want less numbers of lanyard, sewn-in can be the best option. With this method, you can order as low as 50 which are not possible with other printing options.

Lanyards cannot be complete without attachments. So, attachments also matter when a lanyard is designed. Lanyard service providers offer different types of connectors with lanyards. Many outlets are available online. Choose the best one that suits your needs and personality.
